V. and the Czech Centre Berlin once again take a look at contemporary Czech theatre in the 2017 Gleanings. Rudcenkova | Jan Z\u00e1torsk\u00fd<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Kate\u0159ina Rud\u010denkov\u00e1<\/strong> (born in 1976) is a Czech poet, prose author and playwright. She studied at the Jaroslav Je\u017eek Conservatorium (with a focus on song lyrics and script-writing) and Economics at the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague. She has published four volumes of poetry: \u201c<strong>Ludwig\u201d<\/strong> (1999), \u201c<strong>Nen\u00ed nutn\u00e9, abyste m\u011b nav\u0161t\u011bvoval\u201d<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>No Need to Visit Me\u201d<\/strong> 2001), \u201c<strong>Popel a slast\u201d<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>Ashes and Lust\u201d<\/strong> 2004) and \u201c<strong>Ch\u016fze po dun\u00e1ch\u201d<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>Walking on Sand dunes\u201d<\/strong> 2013). For the latter, she was awarded the 2014 Magnesia Litera Prize for Poetry, one of the most important Czech literary prizes. Her stories have appeared in the collection \u201c<strong>Noci, noci\u201d<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>Nights, Nights\u201d<\/strong>, 2004). Her play \u201c<strong>Niekur\u201d<\/strong>, for which she received the 2006 Alfr\u00e9d Radok Prize, premiered in 2008 at the Prague Theatre. A staged reading of \u201c<strong>\u010cas t\u0159e\u0161\u0148ov\u00e9ho d\u00fdmu\u201d <\/strong>(\u201c<strong>The Time of Cherry Smoke\u201d<\/strong>) took place at the Immigrants\u2019 Theater in New York in 2008. In 2003, she received the Hubert Burda Prize for Young Eastern European Poetry. In 2007, she took part in a residency for foreign playwrights at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She has taken part in numerous international literature festivals. Her direct, sensual poetry with autobiographical connotations has been translated into twenty languages, a selection of which has appeared in German entitled <strong>\u201c\u2026nicht n\u00f6tig, mich zu besuchen\u201d<\/strong> (\u201c<strong>No Need to Visit Me\u201d<\/strong>), Klagenfurt: Wieser Verlag, 2002, as a bilingual edition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Time of Cherry Smoke<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3270\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3270\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3270\" src=\"http:\/\/www.drama-panorama.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/05\/IMG_0445_kl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Barbora Schnelle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Why does the word genius have no corresponding female form? And what can women today learn from Cinderella, Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood? In the play \u201cThe Time of the Cherry Smoke\u201d, three generations come together \u2013 mother, daughter and grandmother \u2013 and present their visions of their lives to each other. In her playful language, full of poetic images, the author describes society\u2019s pressure on women to function according to specific socio-cultural models. Alongside the real level, there are several dream sequences in which the protagonists wait at their weddings (in reference to Beckett\u2019s \u201cWaiting for Godot\u201d) and transform into classic fairytale characters.<\/p>\n<p>Translation into German: Barbora Schnelle<\/p>\n<p>The play was translated with support from Lydia Nagel.<\/p>\n<p>As part of Ein St\u00fcck: Tschechien: Gleanings 2017, Drama Panorama, The Czech Centre Berlin and the Department of West-Slavic Languages at the Humboldt University Berlin will hold a workshop on contemporary Czech drama and its translation (using the example of Kate\u0159ina Rud\u010denkov\u00e1\u2019s \u010cas t\u0159e\u0161\u0148ov\u00e9ho d\u00fdmu\/The Time of the Cherry Smoke). The workshop, aimed at Czech Studies students, will provide insights into contemporary Czech drama, introduce its most important protagonists and give an introduction to theatre translation with concrete translation exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop led by: Barbora Schnelle, Lydia Nagel and Henning Bochert.<\/p>\n<p>With friendly support from the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Berlin<\/p>\n<p><u>Information about the festival organisers:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>There is a new generation of playwrights in the Czech Republic, whose texts are relevant to the entire European region and which nonetheless are barely known outside the country. The Berlin association <strong>Drama Panorama: Forum for Translation and Theatre e. V.<\/strong> in cooperation with the <strong>Czech Centre Berlin<\/strong> aims to close this gap with its festival <strong>Ein St\u00fcck: Tschechien<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drama Panorama: Forum for Translation and Theatre<\/strong> e. V. Drama Panorama is a forum linking the work of theatre translators and playwrights with theatre practitioners and theatres. It organises workshops, readings and panel discussions on topics related to international theatre exchange. One of the aims of the project is to present new, contemporary foreign-language plays in German translation. In the past, playwrights such as Dorota Mas\u0142owska, Ma\u0142gorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk, Jolanta Janiczak (Poland), Minja Bogavac, Filip Vujo\u0161evi\u0107 (Serbia), Roman Sikora (Czech Republic), Tarell Alvin McCraney, Thomas Bradshaw, Andrea Stolowitz (USA), Val\u00e8re Novarina, Simone Rist (France), Victor Hugo Rasc\u00f3n-Banda, David Olguin (Mexico) and Guillermo Calder\u00f3n (Chile) have participated in Drama Panorama events and panel discussions about their work.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Czech Centre Berlin<\/strong> has been regularly exhibiting contemporary art, design and international documentary films on current topics. Alternative music concerts, discussions and readings with young Czech authors also take place here.
