Among others, Stephanie LeBolt wrote BASHERT as a short radio play which I translated from English into German. The word does not really make sense until the audio play reveals that it is Yiddish, that it is about growing up between languages and cultures. The word is related to the German &#8220;beschert&#8221;, the past participle of &#8220;bescheren&#8221;, which here means as much as: determined by fate.
