About the meaning of life for an individual? About ideas, intrigues, and politicians? About everyday life and the values of an era? And what if history is told through the lens of a second gaze: in translation? Henning Bochert and Claudia Hamm present two exemplary books in which historical events are portrayed differently through the prism of various perspectives and languages\u2014and for which they, in turn, had to find a new language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/henningbochert.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/carrere-kolchose.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17235\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/henningbochert.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/david-vaughan_cover_hires_kl.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17240\" style=\"width:309px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <em>H\u00f6ret meine Stimme!<\/em>, David Vaughan describes the atmosphere during the Sudeten crisis in Czechoslovakia; in his great autobiographical family and historical epic <em>Kolchose<\/em>, Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re explores European history since the Russian Revolution and its consequences for four generations. In both novels, political propaganda plays a role in the run-up to a land grab: Carr\u00e8re\u2019s mother, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Carr\u00e8re d\u2019Encausse, as France\u2019s leading expert on Russia, was misled by an image of Russia that turned reality on its head. Chamberlain and Czechoslovakia were misled by Hitler\u2019s promises regarding the Sudetenland, with radio playing a decisive role. In both novels, there are protagonists who translate \u2013 and with them come new perspectives.
