The literary highlights of the year certainly include Proulx’s masterpiece, Kerangal’s surprising, remarkably dense book, and the slim “Journal” by Frisch. One third of the books read can be categorized as newer German language prose, almost half are international fiction, and the rest are non-fiction or German language classics.

100 Years That Shook the World

translated from German by Kate McNaughton

A series of theatre events by the Theatre of Generations (Театр Поколений) to mark the 100th Anniversary of the October Revolution in St Petersburg, 06.-16.11.2017

Despite being one of the most globally significant events of the past century, the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia is not officially discussed in the Russian Federation, the state that replaced the Soviet Union which the Revolution had created. This is connected to Russia’s consciously vague and distant attitude to history, which might be summed up as follows: Russia has had more or less impressive periods in its history, but has always been a powerful state with a decisive influence on the world stage. AM BODEN (GROUNDED) in Zittau

The opening of GROUNDED (German title: AM BODEN) at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater in Zittau on 29 September 2017, was good for a surprise. Knowing the director, I expected it to be good, of course. What I was not prepared for, however, was its disciplined strictness, however, in which the demanding production goes farther than most other German-language productions of the play. For the duration of uncut ninety-five minutes, Read More »
