»Die Rose im Sand« – An Evening About a Remarkable Woman
Roman Kupisch talks with Henning Bochert, editor and translator of Susan Glaspell
The author Susan Glaspell was as rare and fleeting a phenomenon as a rose in the sand. In the literary world of the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, she was an institution whose writing shaped the style of an entire generation of writers. With her theatre company, The Provincetown Players, she had a decisive influence on the development of modern North American theatre. She helped Eugene O’Neill achieve his breakthrough.
The publisher, translator and actor Henning Bochert has rediscovered Susan Glaspell. *The Rose in the Sand* is a collection of short stories translated by Bochert, bringing this once-celebrated author to a German audience for the first time.
Henning Bochert will read from her work and, together with TdA dramaturg Roman Kupisch, explore the work of this extraordinary writer, who manages to write about poverty, patriarchy and migration in polished prose whilst always maintaining a generous, empathetic sense of humour.
Henning Bochert, born in Wuppertal, graduated in acting from Berlin University of the Arts, works as an author, dramaturge, lecturer and state-certified literary translator for English and German in Berlin. He runs a translation agency and is involved in Weltlesebühne e. V. and Drama Panorama: Forum für Übersetzung und Theater e. V., among others.
