“Bashert” by Stephanie LeBolt
As part of the Hans Gratzer Fellowship, a new round of various texts was created at the Vienna Schauspielhaus. Among others, Stephanie LeBolt wrote BASHERT as a short radio play which I translated from English into German. The word does not really make sense until the audio play reveals that it is Yiddish, that it is about growing up between languages and cultures. The word is related to the German “beschert”, the past participle of “bescheren”, which here means as much as: determined by fate. I translated the text from English into German, and it gives me great pleasure to hear the voices in the writing now embodied by real human voices in the composed audio piece.
The radio play was produced by ORF and broadcast on Ö1 in the series Blaue Stunde on 15 June 2026 at 9 pm.
